Healthy Art?
August 14th, 2007
What role can health have in Art? We all know that art, in itself, is a carcinogen. Goes right along with smoke, and liver failure and illegal things in dark alleys. It sits right inside of the duffel bag, next the the hits of acid, meant to be traded for some crack cocaine. It stays up all night, sleeps through every alarm, even fire and exceeds the speed limit. Secreted straight through the nailbeds, as you mix paint with your hands. It is stolen, it is adultery, it is low down and fun. Line up all the cells and tell them all to fuck off, because you will do what you like, what you want, and if that involves something in the back alley with some gold spray paint and a hooker, well, sobeit.
So what can you do when you decide that you want to clean it all up a little? Maybe asbestos falling on your head, while you smoke filterless cigs, and drink paint thinner, maybe that is all slowly going to stop. And body modifications turn into muscles and less scars and mutilations. And highs that came from a brutal pain start to come from some happy place, some wierd thing that you worked at? Where do you place all of this new found energy? If you cannot stand back and smoke a cigarette, how do you get back from your work? If you cannot shake from caffeine abuse, how will you let it all go, how will you hold the charcoal when your hands are steady? Obviously, one does benefit from the meditation and the sobriety makes it easier to hold on to the new ideas. But then what? It seems like you might be a little dishonest, to filter these ideas, to let them simmer before you smack them out.
It’s a little wierd. But worth looking into.
